Connecting our community with trails

rwrt header

Since our establishment in 1982, the Bay Area Community Foundation has proudly initiated and funded projects improving the quality of life in Bay County with none more conspicuously than our own Bay County Riverwalk and Railtrail System. This interconnected 17.5 mile network of pedestrian walkways provides non-motorized, handicapped-accessible pathways linking the full range of our community landscapes; from Bay City’s highly popular riverfront at Veteran’s Memorial Park, to the City’s center, and back out again through woodlands and marshes to agricultural and residential areas of Portsmouth, Hampton and Bangor Townships. There is also an extension that connects the Bay City loop northwesterly to the Bay City State Recreation Area.

Thousands of residents and visitors alike walk, run, ride or blade our trails every year and for good reason. Imagine – no fees and unlimited access to fresh air, striking scenery and all varieties of parks, shops and activities along the trail. Jump on where you want, jump off when you wish. Convenient parking is available throughout the area and is clearly marked on all trail maps.

For more information on how you can contribute to the Riverwalk/Railtrail Fund, or to other special projects of the Community Foundation please contact the Bay Area Community Foundation by calling (989) 893-4438.

Enjoy the colors this fall and walk or run a 5K or 10 mile along the BayZil portion of the trail that connects Bay City with Zilwaukee. All proceeds from the event will go to the Riverwalk/Railtrail's Maintenance Endowment Fund at Bay Area Community Foundation to help preserve the trails for years to come.
