Confirmed in Compliance with National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations
ALBERT O. AND LILLIAN RATHKE EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP

Lillian Brechtel Rathke of Bay City, through her Will, named BACF as the entity to administer her funds. Mrs. Rathke, who passed away on June 9, 1985, specified that these funds create the Albert O. and Lillian Rathke Educational Fund. Lillian was an active member of many civic and social organizations. She and her husband were committed to the community and to the enrichment of its young people.

Criteria:  Bay County resident. Senior in high school or a transfer student.  Attending Central Michigan University.  Minimum 2.8 GPA if in high school; minimum 2.5 GPA if a transfer student.  Full-time student.  Award is based upon academic ability, financial need, and other criteria.  Recipients may reapply.

ALPHA DELTA KAPPA – ALPHA PI/FIDELIS GAMMA CHAPTER SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was established by Alpha Delta Kappa - Alpha Pi Chapter in 1993.  Alpha Delta Kappa International Honorary Sorority for Women Educators is an organization recognizing outstanding women educators who are actively engaged in teaching, administration, or a specialized field of the teaching profession. Its focus is to build fellowship, promote high standards of education, promote educational and charitable projects, sponsor scholarships, and contribute to work, understanding, goodwill, and peace.

Criteria:  Bay County resident. College junior.  Minimum 3.2 GPA.  Proof of admission into the Education Program. 

ARTHUR H. CANSFIELD EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP

Arthur H. Cansfield is best remembered as the first Principal at T.L. Handy High School. He served in this capacity from 1948 until 1963. Before this, Mr. Cansfield was a physical education instructor and coach at what was then known as Handy Junior High School. His memorial fund was turned over to BACF in 1988.

Criteria:  Bay County resident.  Attended Handy Intermediate School.  Full or part-time student.  Financial need.

JAMES T. DOYLE SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was established in 1996 in memory of Jim Doyle by his family.  He passed away on July 3, 1995.  Jim graduated from Olivet College in 1965.  He spent 29 years in education working for the Bangor Township Schools.  He spent 17 years at the junior high and 12 years at the high school, the last seven years as Director of Athletics and Recreation at John Glenn.  He also coached both boys and girls.  The track and field complex is named in his behalf.

He was named Wrestling Official of the year in 1984, was recipient of the Maria Shriver Award for work with Special Olympics in 1987, the Allen W. Bush Award for commitment and service to the MHSAA in 1993, was the Region VIII Athletic Director of the year and was honored by the American Red Cross for 2,000 hours of volunteer teaching of first aid and CPR.  Jim dedicated his life to impacting the lives of children.

Criteria:  Bay County resident.  Senior at John Glenn High School.  Full-time student.  Preference will be given to students that have participated in varsity athletics.  Supply a letter of recommendation from a coach of a sport(s) in which they participated.

BAY AREA CHAMBER OF COMERCE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP

Established by the Bay Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation for the purpose of awarding scholarships for support for tuition, books and fees to students pursuing a college degree in business.

Criteria:  Scholarships will be awarded to one student from each of the following Bay County high schools; All Saints, Bay Arenac Community, Bay City Central, Bangor John Glenn, Essexville-Hampton Garber, Pinconning, Western, and Wenona.  Minimum GPA of 3.0.  Financial need.  Students must attend one of the following educational institutions: Davenport University, Delta College, Central Michigan University, Northwood University or Saginaw Valley State University.

BAY AREA RUNNER’S CLUB SCHOLARSHIP

Bay Area Runner’s Club (BARC) established this fund in 2010 to raise the awareness of the need for physical activity in everyone’s lives.  We believe in the importance of strong role models in our communities and encourage students to achieve their very best.

Criteria: Arenac, Bay, Huron, Midland, Saginaw, or Tuscola County resident. High school senior, Minimum 2.5 GPA.  Full time student.  Financial need. 2 years of track & field or cross country. Student demonstrates a commitment to do their personal best academically and athletically. One letter of recommendation from track coach/staff.

BAY AREA USBC BOWLING ASSOCIATION “WALLACE E. MATTHEW”

These scholarships were established by the bowling associations in 1987 in memory of Wallace E. Matthew who was a member of the Board of Directors of the Bay City BA for more than 40 years and served as secretary for 35 years.

Criteria:  Bay, Arenac or Tuscola county resident.  Applicant must be a senior in high school and accepted as a full time student at an accredited college or university.  The applying student must be: a current member of the Bay Area USBC Association, a member of the Bay Area USBC Association for at least two of the last four seasons, the child of a member of the Bay Area USBC Association or a member of their high school bowling team for at least two years.

Applicant must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.  Preference will be given in the following order: current USBC members who are children of members, followed by current members, high school bowlers, and children of current members.

BAY CITY CIVITAN/MARCELLA BARBER SCHOLARSHIP

The fund was established in honor of the Bay City Civitan Club and as a tribute to Marcella Barber who was associated with the Club in various ways from its creation until the time of her death.  Marcella lent a hand to the Bay City Civitan Club, even before women were allowed to be members.  When it was acceptable for women to become members, she joined the organization and held various offices at the local, regional, national and international levels.  She was honored with a plaque for 25 years of membership in 2006.  Marcella was a true Civitan through and through with a heart of gold.

The Bay City Civitan Club is an organization that provides networking, fellowship, community involvement, personal development and community service for its members while placing an emphasis on improving the lives of those with developmental disabilities.

Criteria:  Bay County resident.  Full-time student at a public or private college/university in the State of Michigan.  Minimum 3.0 GPA. Priority will be given to a student entering their Junior or Senior year of study and majoring in a field related to developmental disabilities.

BAY CITY KIWANIS EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Bay City Kiwanis Club, a community service club chartered in January 1917, helps and supports many local projects for youth and the handicapped. Sample recipients include Boys and Girls Club, 4-H, Bay Area Family YMCA, Do-All Inc. American Red Cross, Disability Service Resource Center, Bay Arts Council, The Imagination Library, Style for Students, Salvation Army's Food Pantry, Toys for Tots, MY Lead (Michigan Youth Leadership program), and Community Beautification. Kiwanis established their education fund with the BACF in 1985.

Criteria:  Bay County resident.  Accredited college or university in Michigan.  Minimum 3.5 GPA.  Full-time student.  Financial need.  The award may be used for an academic undergraduate course of study, and student must maintain a 2.5 GPA minimum during enrollment.  Recipients may reapply; award may not exceed four years.

BAY COMMITMENT

The Bay Commitment Scholarship was established by the Bay Area Community Foundation to investigate the long term viability and funds required for an educational promise program in Bay County.

Criteria: Bay County resident for 6 years. Be a first-generation student (neither parent nor legal guardian has obtained a Bachelors Degree), have attended Bay County high school/s for 4 years, meet all high school graduation requirements and receive a diploma from a Bay County high school by June 2012, attend either Delta College or Saginaw Valley State University full time (minimum 12 credit hours).

BAY COUNTY DENTAL AUXILIARY SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is designated for individuals wishing to pursue a career in the field of dentistry. The Bay County Dental Auxiliary would like to acknowledge those who understand the importance of achieving the optimal dental health. Those pursuing a dental career should use their knowledge and expertise to treat dental disease and educate the public sector of the importance of preventive dentistry. The Bay County Dental Auxialiary feels that dentistry is a challenging and exciting field. Applicants choosing to go into the field of dentistry will find its benefits rewarding and fulfilling.

Criteria:  Bay County resident.  Full-time student. Financial need. Open to Dental students, Dental Hygiene students, Dental Auxiliary (Assistant) students and Dental Technology students. Prior recipients may re-apply.

1.    Dental Students - accepted into an accredited dental school or enrolled in one.
2.    Dental Hygiene Students - accepted into an accredited Dental Hygiene program and must have completed one year of Dental Hygiene clinical studies.
3.    Dental Auxiliary (Assistant) Students - accepted into an accredited Dental Auxiliary program and must have completed one year of Dental Auxiliary studies.
4.    Dental Technology Students - accepted into an accredited Dental Technology program and must have completed one year of Dental Technology studies.

BAY COUNTY MEDICAL SOCIETY AUXILIARY MERIT FUND

One of the purposes of the Medical Alliance is to assist the Bay County Medical society in the protection of public health and the advancement of health education in medicine. In order to encourage students to enter the fields of nursing, medicine, and physical therapy, this fund was established by the Alliance in 1992.

Criteria:  Bay County resident.  Minimum 3.0 GPA.  Full or part-time student.  Recipients must have completed one year of college and provide proof of acceptance (such as a letter from program director, acceptance letter, etc.) into an accredited program of nursing, physical therapy, graduate medical school or other health-care related program.

CATHERINEJEAN MACDONALD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Catherinejean MacDonald was a 5th grade math teacher at Bangor Central, but her interests and talents reached far beyond education, including a love for all fine arts. She thought of a plan for gathering state matching funds for educational television and was appointed by the State of Michigan to the State Working Committee for Education Television which developed Delta College and Educational Television Channel 19, which we enjoy today. Catherinejean will be remembered through this memorial fund.

Criteria: Bay County resident. Student must intend to study the fine arts - theater, arts, music, dance, including public TV and public radio.  Financial need.

CITIZENS BANK OF BAY CITY EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP

Citizens Bank of Bay City is committed to providing on-going excellent service to the Bay County Area.  In appreciation of their customers and the community, they began to develop an endowment fund in 1990 to support two annual grants for students enrolled in full-time business degree programs. Citizens Bank will match all contributions made to this fund by bank employees.  A standing committee of bank employees will oversee awarding this fund.

Criteria:  Bay County resident.  Full-time student at Delta, SVSU, Northwood or CMU.  Current customer of Citizens Bank.  Minimum 3.00 GPA.  Finance, management, accounting or other business degree major.  Priority will be given to students involved in school related organizations and activities, including community service projects.  Citizens Bank of Bay City employees and their families are also eligible to apply.

CLAIR A. AND HANNAH WHITE EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Clair and Hannah White Scholarship was established in 1992 by their sons in recognition of years of community involvement by their parents. Clair held two statewide offices: Michigan State University Board of Trustees and Wayne State Board of Governors. He was also Bay City’s residing gadfly, always questioning decisions made in the public arena. Hannah was active in many home economic organizations and ran the first nursery for the Bay City Public Schools for working mothers in World War II.  Mr. and Mrs. White taught the students of Bay City Public and Parochial schools and Bangor Township schools for a combined total of 67 years.

Criteria:  Bay County resident.  Bay City Central High School or Bangor John Glenn graduate.  Attending any public college or university in Michigan.  Full-time student.  Exhibit academic potential, leadership qualities, and characteristics of overcoming social, political and/or economic obstacles.  Participation in student council, drama, clubs, newspaper, athletics, yearbook, or community involvement.  Major in a curriculum dealing with civics, history, economics, home economics, interior design, or nutrition.

COACH’S CHAMPIONS SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The coach’s Champions Scholarship was established by Coach Dean Richards to honor the memory of past players and loved ones.  These fine young men: Eric Richards, Ryan Curry, Dave and Dan Goetz, E.J. Kish, Dan McKenzie, Mike Majchrzak, and Craig Warmbier, were true champions.  These special young men always embodied the champion spirit and brought out the best in others.  This scholarship is dedicated to the memory of these outstanding young men so that others may be able to be “champions” in their selected field of study.

Criteria: Bay County Student, 3.0 GPA, Varsity Sport senior year, financial need

DONER FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Doner Family Scholarship Fund was started in 2002 to benefit youth members of the Boys and Girls Club of Bay County.

Criteria:  Bay County resident.  Boys and Girls Club member or staff member enrolled in a Bay County High School. Attending an accredited college.  Financial need.  One letter of recommendation from the Boys and Girls Club Executive Director stipulating he/she is an active member of the club or is a staff member is required.

DOW CORNING EMPLOYEES EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP

Dow Corning employees established this scholarship in 1989 to benefit youth from Arenac, Bay and Tuscola Counties. Their objective is to build the fund so at least three awards can be granted annually. A standing committee composed of Bay Area Dow Corning employees oversees the recommendation of awards.

Criteria:  Arenac, Bay or Tuscola County resident.  High school senior.  Minimum 2.5 GPA in all “required, core courses.” This award is based on merit and may be used for undergraduate study at any accredited college or university.

EDMOND H. BORGIOLI EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP

Edmond H. Borgioli was Principal of Kolb School in Bay City for 21 years, retiring from that position in 1976. Out of respect for the understanding, patience, and love, which he showed his students, the Edmond H. Borgioli Educational Award was created by his friends to honor him and to allow his name and ideals to have a continuing role in the education of our youth. The award originated in 1976. Funds were turned over to BACF in 1989.

Criteria:  Bay County resident.  Attended Kolb School for at least one year.  Full-time student.  Financial Need.  Involvement in school and community activities.  Exhibit exemplary character and promise and sincere in furthering educational objectives.

ELIZABETH C. HEATH SCHOLARSHIP

Elizabeth Heath is a native of Bay City who, for 35 years, taught Kindergarten and first grade classes at Kolb and McKinley Schools. She found her work completely fulfilling and enjoyed the innocence of the children. Although she moved to Alma, Bettie still calls Bay County home and wished to support our community through this scholarship.

Criteria: Bay County resident. Completing last year of an Associates or Bachelors Degree. Minimum 3.0 GPA.  Financial need.

EMILEE ANN PRIME VETERINARY FIELD EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP

Emilee was a beautiful and outstanding young lady who was loved by all who knew her.  Emilee graduated with honors from Bay City Central High School in 2009.  She attended Delta College and was a member of the Humane Society of Bay County.  Her love for animals let her to pursue her dream of one day becoming a veterinarian.  Emilee passed away at nineteen years old in an automobile accident on February 26, 2011.  Her family members and the Humane Society of Bay County started this scholarship in memory of Emilee.

Criteria: Bay County graduate attending a Michigan College.  Priority will be given to students involved in an animal welfare organization.  Full Time Student.  Minimum GPA 3.0.  Financial need.

FRATERNAL ORDER OF POLICE, LODGE #103, BENEVOLENT SCHOLARSHIP

The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #103 Benevolent Scholarship was established to benefit students in need.

Criteria:  Bay County resident.  Minimum 2.75 GPA.  Financial need.  Involvement in the community.

FRATERNAL ORDER OF POLICE, LODGE #103, JACK SEBALD SCHOLARSHIP

The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #103 Jack Sebald Scholarship was established to assist children and grandchildren of Bay City police officers in their pursuit of academic excellence. Jack Sebald, a fourteen-year employee with Bay City FOP, was instrumental in the establishment of this fund. At age 38, he was working with BACF to set up the fund when he died in February of 1990. The FOP requested naming the fund after him, and the first gifts to the fund were in Jack's memory. Jack worked with the schools in Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE), earned a Police Courageous Service Medal, two lifesaving awards, and a Medal of Valor from the Bay City Fire Department.

Criteria:   Child or grandchild of an active, retired, or deceased Bay City police officer.  Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA. Former applicants may reapply.

THE F.P. HORAK COMPANY – FREDERICK DOUGLAS AND NATALIA RUTH HORAK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The F.P. Horak Company - Frederick Douglas and Natalia Ruth Horak Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established by the officers and shareholders of the company.  The intention of the fund is to honor the memory of Natalie R. Horak who passed away in 2001 and Fredrick D. Horak who passed away in 2002.  The scholarship fund has been established to provide one or more annual scholarship awards to eligible children and grandchildren of F.P. Horak employees.

Criteria: Must be a child or grandchild of an employee or spouse of an employee of F.P. Horak Employment Services, Inc. reporting to The F.P. Horak Company or Digital Imaging Center located in Bay County, MI. Minimum GPA 2.5

FREDERICK KINDINGER SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was established in 2011 in memory of Frederick Lewis Kindinger. Fred was born in Cleveland, Ohio on Decoration Day, May 30, 1911, the son of Philip and Mabel (Lewis) Kindinger. He was the oldest of six sons. He had three sisters, but one died at birth and another in early childhood so he grew up with only one. When he graduated from high school he wanted to go to college but there was no money for college during the depression.

In 1938 the family moved to Adrian. Fred first worked in a foundry and later went to work for Consumers Power as a meter reader. He really enjoyed his job. He was offered better inside jobs, but he remained a meter reader until ill health caused his retirement in 1969.

Fred enjoyed many things, such as riding his bicycle, going to the library, listening to music, and working in his yead and garden. He was an intelligent, caring , thoughtful and helpful person.

When he passed away in 1996 he left behind trusts that will now share his dream of attending college with others.

Criteria: Bay County resident. Financial need.

GEORGE R. DAVIDSON EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP

The George R. Davidson Scholarship, placed with BACF in 1985, was created by Mrs. Jane Davidson in memory of her late husband and his contributions to the community.  The fund will assist Bay County graduates in obtaining a college education.  Mr. Davidson was a teacher of English at Handy High School from 1965 through 1983.

Criteria:  Bay County Resident.  High School graduate who has not yet attended a post high school institution.  Financial need.

GMPT BAY CITY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This fund was established in memory of past GM Powertrain Bay City employees for the purpose of honoring their contributions to family and community.

Criteria:  An employee, spouse, child or grandchild of an active, retired or deceased employee of GM Powertrain Bay City. Employee does not have to be a Bay County resident.  May reapply in future years.

GREAT LAKES SAFETY TRAINING CENTER SCHOLARSHIP

Great Lakes Safety Training Center established this fund with the help of many local contractors to benefit individuals who are pursuing a career in the trades or construction with an emphasis on safety.  Their mission is “Preparing People to Live Safely Every Day” and would like to support those who want to continue helping others to live safely.

Criteria: Resident or graduate of Bay or Arenac Counties.  Average Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.  Full time at a college, university, or licensed vocational/technical school.  Student must have a declared major in trades or construction with an emphasis on safety.  This award is based on academic ability and interest in the intended field of study.  Recipients may reapply.

GREEN HUT CHARITIES “LEO MALECKI” EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP

In 1986, Green Hut Charities chose to honor Leo Malecki by naming an educational award after him because of the many years that he worked for the youth of Bay County. The American Legion Baseball Program would be nonexistent without Leo's devoted efforts.

Criteria:  Bay County resident. Full-time student. Financial need.   Preference will be given to students who have played American Legion or high school varsity baseball or softball. Recipients may reapply in future years.

HANDY INTERMEDIATE BOOSTER’S SCHOLARSHIP

In 1993, the Handy Intermediate Booster Club sponsored the seed money to establish a perpetually funded scholarship for Handy Intermediate students. One of the Booster Club’s goals is continuing education of Handy students and continuing financial support for this goal.

Criteria:  Bay County resident. Attended Handy Intermediate for a minimum of one school year.  Accepted to an accredited Michigan college, university or technical school.  Minimum 3.0 GPA.  Priority will be given to high school seniors.

HAZEL E. McCLURE COMMERCIAL ART EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was established in the name of Hazel E. McClure, a long-time resident of Bay City who graduated from the Cleveland School of Art and was employed as head of the art department at the Autolite Company.  Mrs. McClure's love of art was evident in her life at home and at work.  The scholarship is to recognize scholastic achievement, encourage continued progress and provide assistance to Bay County students following a course of study in commercial art.

Criteria: Bay County resident. Full time undergraduate, in a commercial art program. Minimum 2.5 GPA.

HELEN AND WALTER THORSBERG SCHOLARSHIP

The first Bay Area Community Foundation scholarship fund, the Thorsberg Scholarship, was established in 1985 by daughters Barbara Watson Fanger and Kaye Watson Petersen.  It was set up to honor the memory of Helen and Walter Thorsberg. The Thorsbergs were very involved and supportive of higher education in Bay County most of their lives and enjoyed helping students in need with their education.  Helen taught for twenty years in the Bay City Schools.  Walter was the Registrar of Bay City Junior College and had his graduate degree in mathematics from the University of Michigan.

Criteria:  Bay County resident.  Senior in high school or a student just transferring to the University of Michigan.  Full-time student.  Award is based equally on academic ability and financial need.

HUGH G. HANSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Hugh G. Hanson  Scholarship was established in 1994 by his wife, Margaret A. (Peggy) Hanson, in memory of her husband who passed away in July, 1993. Hugh was a graduate of the University of Michigan where he also earned his Master’s Degree. He owned Garber Buick in Bay City, served on several boards and committees during his lifetime, and received numerous community and professional awards. He was an advocate of youth and education, and he loved life.

Criteria: Bay County resident. High school senior or recent graduate. Minimum 3.0 GPA. Financial need and academic ability. 

JAMES C. LAPRAIRIE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Jim was a Navy veteran who learned his trade in the service and continued attending technical schools during the early years of his career.  He joined Mid State Litho, Inc.  in 1985 as a sales and service representative and continued technical and sales training during his 25 year career with Mid State . Jim was diagnosed in April 2009 with stage IV adenocarinoma.  He fought valiantly but lost his battle on April 20, 2010 at the age of 51.  Education was extremely important to Jim.  During his Naval service as well as his nearly 30 years in the printing industry, Jim continued his technical and service training.  This Scholarship is designed to alleviate some of the financial strain that families of cancer patients experience.

Criteria: Bay County resident who has a parent or sibling undergoing cancer treatment. Minimum 3.0 GPA.

JOHN J. MURRAY EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP

This fund was established by John (“Johann”) J. Murray to provide financial assistance to students graduating from John Glenn or All Saints High Schools who are planning to attend either Delta Community College or Michigan State University. Each of these institutions and dedicated faculty created the educational foundation for a professional career with Deloitte and Touche in public accounting as a CPA and later executive financial positions in the hospitality industry, including The Walt Disney Company and Hilton Worldwide. Johann believes post high school education is essential to compete in the global economy and helps achieve financial and other life goals. It is hoped that the recipients will someday remember those institutions that contributed to their success and pay the favor forward and assist aspiring students with their educational pursuits.

Criteria: Graduate of John Glenn or All Saints. Attending Delta College or Michigan State University. Full time. Minimum 3.3 GPA. Financial need.  Priority given to college freshman and sophomore years and participants of community service.

JOSEPHINE S. & HARRY P.  GILL  SCHOLARSHIP

Josephine S. Gill was a teacher in the Bay City Public School System for 19 years. A mother of five children, she was also very active in community work. This scholarship was established in 1992 by her family and friends as a memorial to her and to honor her for her commitment to education and the community.

Criteria:  Bay County resident. Full time student.  Minimum 3.0 GPA. Financial need. 

KARL K. LEIBRAND EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship fund is established by Dorothy E. Flood in memory of her brother, Karl K. Leibrand, who died in 1967. Karl graduated from Bay City Eastern High School in 1921. In his later professional years, he served Bay County as prosecuting attorney, circuit judge and as a delegate to the State Convention that revised the Michigan Constitution in 1961.

Criteria:  Bay County resident. Full-time student accepted at Albion, Alma, Calvin, Hillsdale, Hope or Kalamazoo Colleges. Minimum GPA 2.5.  Recipients may reapply in future years.

KATY BRYANT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Katy Bryant is remembered for her love and compassion for others. Katy was a speech pathologist for the Bay City Public Schools for many years. She was an excellent teacher, loving each of her students as individuals and taking an active interest in their lives long after she had them as students. This scholarship honors her memory and her dedication to speech pathology.

Criteria:  Bay County resident.  Studying speech pathology.  Financial need.

MARIE GUOAN SCHOLARSHIP

The fund was created in honor of Marie Guoan, John Glenn's first guidance counselor. The first award was given in 1978.

Criteria:  Bay County resident. John Glenn student. Full or part –time college, university or trade school.  Extracurricular participation and a positive contribution to John Glenn High School. Academic ability and attendance will be secondary criteria. 

MARION H. WHITTAKER EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Marion H. Whittaker Scholarship is awarded to needy and deserving students who are Bay County residents and wish to attend University of Detroit Mercy, Delta College, or any of the American Indian Colleges. 

Mrs. Whittaker was born in Bay City on June 22, 1918, and resided here most of her lifetime.  She was a member of the Women’s Army Corp during World War II.  Marion graduated from and taught at the University of Detroit.  She then taught at the University of Wisconsin for seven years.  She was hired at Delta College in 1964 and retired in December, 1993.  During her tenure at Delta, Marion was very active in the American Chemical Society, locally and nationally.  She was involved in many committees at Delta, including Science for the 80’s and 90’s and Computers.  In its early years, Marion ran the planetarium.  She participated in Odyssey of the Mind, Science Olympiad, and the Tuscola Academic Games.  She ran an elderhostel program at Delta in 1984. Marion was a walking chemistry handbook.  She knew obscure facts as well as theoretical concepts.  She taught inorganic and organic chemistry.  Her interests were wide and varied.  She read voraciously and was dedicated to education, including possessing a deep concern for Native American education.  Marion passed away on July 9, 1994.

Criteria:  Bay County resident.  Attending Delta College, University of Detroit Mercy, or any of the American Indian Colleges.  Full-time student.  Financial need.

MARY KATE CARNEY SCHOLARSHIP

Mary Kate Carney was a devoted wife, mother, and Speech Therapist who worked in the field of Special Education for twelve years before losing her long and valiant fight against brain cancer.  Her innovation and passion to improve the communication needs for all students was immeasurable.  She touched the lives of the students and their families, as well as the staff that she worked with.  Kate truly loved her job and the special children and adults that she serviced.  She is deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her.  This scholarship fund was established by Kate's friends and family to honor her memory and to encourage and support those people pursuing degrees in Speech/Language Pathology or Special Education.

Criteria: Arenac or Bay County resident. Bay or Arenac County high school graduate; enrolling or enrolled in Speech/Language Pathology or Special Education.  Minimum 2.5 GPA. School and community involvement.

MICHIGAN TRUCKING ASSOCIATION EQUIPMENT & MAINTENANCE COUNCIL TRI-CITY CHAPTER SCHOLARSHIP

The Equipment and Maintenance Council (E&M) was organized by the Michigan Trucking Association in 1946 to provide reliable maintenance information and a forum for the free exchange of ideas for equipment maintenance personnel, suppliers to the transportation industry and others interested in the safe, cost-efficient maintenance of truck fleets. Starting in 2006 the Tri-City Chapter organized an annual golf outing for the purpose of raising funds to give scholarships to deserving individuals pursuing careers in the diesel equipment technology field. 

Criteria: Bay, Midland, Saginaw, Arenac, Gladwin, Shiawassee, Lapeer, Tuscola, or Genesee County resident. Applicant must be enrolled in a 2/4 year program in the diesel equipment technology field.  Minimum 2.5 GPA.

NATHAN R. HUGO SCHOLARSHIP

The Nathan R. Hugo Educational Scholarship was established in 2001 by his family and friends.  Nate was killed in a tragic automobile accident on March 30, 2001. Nate had a bright and exciting life and career ahead of him. Nate was a kind, gentle, caring, young man with a great sense of humor who touched so many lives in his 17 years. Nate loved the Garber musical and cherished all children. This scholarship is dedicated to the memory of Nate and will live on forever.

Criteria: Bay County resident. High School Senior entering the field of Elementary Education. Minimum 3.0 GPA. Financial need. Preference will be given to a student involved in music and/or drama and a Garber High School Senior.

OSCAR & LOUISE OSTHELDER GENERAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

In 2007, the Osthelder Donor Advised Fund Committee established a scholarship fund to benefit seniors accepted into Delta College and/or Saginaw Valley State University.

Criteria: Bay County resident. Bay County high school senior accepted into Delta College and/or Saginaw Valley State University.

PATRICIA M. SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is established in memory of Pat by her older sister.  Pat was only three years old when she passed away due to a heart problem. Through this scholarship, her life, although short, will be given meaning and purpose. Because she once lived, students of today will receive help.

Criteria:  Bay County resident. Full-time student.  Minimum 3.0 GPA. Financial need. 

PAUL B. GREIN SCHOLARSHIP

The family of Paul B. Grein established this scholarship to honor his memory.  Paul taught in the Bay City Public Schools from 1960 to 1989. In 1990 he began teaching in the Life Long Wellness Department at Delta College as an adjunct instructor/ retiring in 2002. He registered as a sports official with the Michigan High School Athletic Association in 1962 and continued officiating football, basketball, softball & volleyball until 2005. Because of his enthusiasm for the game of softball the family has chosen to award a scholarship in his name to a participant in this sport.

Criteria:  Bay County resident . High school senior. Minimum 3.0 GPA.  Played softball for a minimum of two years & one letter of recommendation from softball coach.

THE PEGGY BROWN EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP

Peggy enjoyed working with the students and staff at Dolson and Riegel Elementary School as a secretary.  She, too, was active in improving the lives of the educational family, especially with her work in the Michigan Educational Support Staff Association. Peggy served as the state president for MESPA and was also the first MESPA member to be selected to the NEA Board of directors. The Peggy Brown Educational Scholarship Award has been established to honor the devotion and services she has shown to public education on both a local and national basis.

Criteria:  Bay County resident. Full or part-time student accepted at a Michigan college or university.  Member or family member of the Michigan Educational Support Personnel Association (MESPA) or Michigan Education Association (MEA).  Financial need.  Prior recipients may reapply.

RICHARD A. SHOCKLEY SCHOLARSHIP

Richard A. Shockley was a man of vision and great ambition.  His entrepreneurial spirit guided him through hotel and restaurant management, designing pension plans and the development of Co-generation power plants.  As a hobby, he renovated condominiums.  He was always on the move and was always giving to others.  He believed that what he gave to others would always come back to him.  This fund will honor the memory of his energy and vitality by providing financial assistance to students with similar qualities.  Applicants demonstrating vision and self-motivation will be favored over those with a high grade point average.

Criteria: Bay County resident. Full-time student at Michigan State.  Recipients may reapply.

ROBERT E. & KATHLEEN A. VANDERBERG FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP FOR EAGLE SCOUTS

Robert E. and Kathleen A. Vanderberg are longtime residents of Bay City, Michigan. Robert, now deceased, retired from the Bay City Police Department while wife, Kathleen, retired from the Bay County Library System. Together, they raised their family in Bay City while actively promoting and participating in scouting programs. Numerous members of the Vanderberg's immediate and extended family have attained the level of Eagle Scout. Mrs. Vanderberg noted that scouting is a "family program" requiring participation of the entire family and provides exceptional leadership training. It has been the family's pleasure to see many of their grandchildren become Eagle Scouts. Mr. and Mrs. Vanderberg enjoyed watching each of them develop and complete their "final project," a community-focused requirement of all who achieve this esteemed honor.

It is the desire of Mrs. Vanderberg that this Fund provides help (through financial assistance) and hope to Eagle Scouts as they pursue their academic goals in higher education.

SCHAIRER FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship fund was established by Roy & Beverly Schairer in 2007.

Criteria: Bay County resident. Bay County high school senior.  Accepted to University of Michigan. Financial need.

THOMAS DRUMMOND MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Thomas Drummond was a passionate and gifted teacher in the Bay City Public Schools for more than forty years. He taught chemistry, physics, and laboratory investigations, and he was a tireless advocate for a broad spectrum of students as they pursued post high school education at all levels. He helped many students understand their own potential and took great pride in the successes of each of his students. He was deeply committed to the importance of “scientific literacy” for all students regardless of the direction their adult lives might take.

Criteria:  Bay County resident.  Bay County high school senior, pursuing a degree in the sciences or science education. GPA of 2.5 or higher.  Financial need.  A letter of reference from an influential science teacher is encouraged but is not essential.

VIRGINIA JOHNSTON SCHOLARSHIP

Virginia C. Johnston, a native of Bay City and a recipient of a local Civic League Loan in 1935, initiated a Student Aid Fund through BACF in 1985. Initially a loan, the fund was converted to a scholarship in 1996. Ms. Johnston, a retired school teacher, taught for 44 years, mostly for the Grosse Pointe Public Schools.  She also taught at the U.S. Army Dependent School in Germany at the University of the Seven Seas.

Criteria: Bay County resident. Student must be in last year of college. Awards are based on financial need, scholastic standing, character and qualities of leadership and citizenship. 

WARREN F. AND RUTH P. MANDLEY MEMORIAL EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP

Warren F. Mandley and Ruth P. Mandley spent most of the 60 years of their married life together in Bay City.  Mrs. Mandley suffered the loss of her mother at the age of 4 years and felt this loss acutely.  Yet, without a role model to guide and encourage her in her early years & young adulthood, Ruth became a loving wife and extraordinary mother.  She was devoted to her husband, Warren, who was plagued by multiple health problems in his later years.  Ruth loved and cared for her family up to the time of her death from cancer in July 1996. Mr. Mandley was an outstanding father who supported his family of 4 children with hard work, faithfulness and determination his whole life.  Warren cherished his Irish heritage, enjoyed hunting and camping, and was owner of Mandley's City Dairy on 22nd Street in Bay City for many years.  He survived his wife by only seven months, having reached the age of 80.  He passed away in February 1997. Mr. and Mrs. Mandley enjoyed their life together in Bay City and chose it as the pl
ace to raise their family. In memory of their affection and dedication as parents, this fund was established in 1996 by their son, Frank E. Mandley, to assist Bay County students in realizing their full potential through higher education.

Criteria:  Bay County resident. High school senior. Full-time undergraduate student in Michigan.  Minimum 2.75 GPA.  Financial need.

ZOE SCHOLARSHIP

Barbara Livingston created this scholarship fund in 1996 to benefit adult women returning to college.  She experienced first-hand the obstacles of being a working adult while putting herself through law school and wished to help other women of similar pursuit.  She served as a trustee of Bay Area Community Foundation from 1996 until her death in 1999.  Barbara chose the name Zoe (pronounced zoee) which means “life” in Greek.

Criteria:  Bay County resident.  Pursuing community college, college, university, apprenticeship program or overseas studies.  Female 25 years of age or older.
